Sharing and Learning

The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you. - B.B. King

Poorna strongly believes that resources should be shared and experiences exchanged so that a lot more people can benefit, even without being centrally involved with Poorna.

In the last year we have had teachers from Sevagram (Wardha), Deenabandhu trust (Chamarajnagar,Karnataka), Vivekananda Girijana Kalyan Kendra (B.R.Hills, Karnataka) and Viveka School ( Betul, M.P.) visiting our school to understand more about child-centred teaching methods and also to learn about the various teacher and student resources that are being used at Poorna.

We have been a partner institution for the International Academy for Creative Teaching. Poorna has collaborated with the National Institute of Advanced Studies to help develop and disseminate language teaching methods in multi-grade classrooms and also to develop supplementary reading material for children in multi-grade schools in tribal areas. Our library too has been appreciated and used by several visitors who have come to the school.

During the 2006-7 academic year, a 13 year old boy from the Deenabandhu Ashram was being hosted for studies at Poorna. Recently, Poorna had organized a visit to Bangalore for children from Puvidham Learning Centre in rural Dharmapuri District of Tamil Nadu. During February 2007, seven children from Puvidham spent 1 month at Poorna as part of a planned exchange program between the 2 schools. The Puvidham children were enthusiastically accommodated in the houses of various Poorna children. We have also had an exchange of children between Poorna and Kanavu School in Kerala.

All such interactions foster a deeper understanding between children from different sections of society. Surely there is a strong case for consolidating our work as a resource centre along with strengthening our learning centre so that it can serve as a site for dissemination of socially relevant methods of education.
